Background of the Study

Political party primaries are crucial in determining the candidates who will run for various political offices, and they often serve as a key indicator of the inclusiveness of a political system. In Gusau Local Government Area, Zamfara State, gender disparities in political party primaries are a persistent issue. Women in this region, like in many other parts of Northern Nigeria, face several obstacles in competing for political positions, including socio-cultural norms, limited access to political networks, and discriminatory practices within political parties. Despite constitutional guarantees for gender equality and international commitments to women's empowerment, women continue to be underrepresented in political positions, especially at the local level. Political parties, as the main vehicles for political participation, play a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape, and their primaries often reflect the party’s commitment to gender equality. This study seeks to investigate gender disparities within political party primaries in Gusau, focusing on the factors that contribute to the underrepresentation of women in these processes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While gender equality has gained prominence in global and national policy frameworks, gender disparities in political party primaries remain a significant challenge in Gusau Local Government Area. Women aspiring to political office often face institutional and structural barriers that prevent them from participating fully in the nomination process. Political parties, which should ideally be inclusive, often reflect patriarchal values that marginalize female aspirants. This study aims to identify the key factors contributing to these gender disparities in political party primaries and assess their impact on women's political representation in Gusau LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the gender disparities in political party primaries in Gusau Local Government Area.

  2. To identify the factors that contribute to the underrepresentation of women in political party primaries in Gusau.

  3. To assess the implications of gender disparities in political party primaries on women’s political participation in Gusau.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What are the gender disparities observed in political party primaries in Gusau Local Government Area?

  2. What factors contribute to the underrepresentation of women in political party primaries in Gusau?

  3. How do gender disparities in political party primaries affect women’s political participation in Gusau?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Gender disparities exist in political party primaries in Gusau Local Government Area, with women being underrepresented in the nomination process.

  2. Socio-cultural factors, political party practices, and limited resources are significant contributors to gender disparities in political party primaries in Gusau.

  3. Gender disparities in political party primaries negatively affect women’s chances of political participation and representation in Gusau.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in highlighting the barriers women face in political party primaries, which are crucial to achieving gender parity in political representation. The findings will be valuable for political parties, policymakers, and gender advocacy groups in designing strategies to enhance women’s participation in political processes, especially within party structures. Additionally, the research will contribute to the broader discourse on gender and politics in Nigeria, offering insights into the unique challenges women face in the political sphere (Yusuf & Atiku, 2023).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the political party primaries in Gusau Local Government Area, Zamfara State, and examine the gender disparities in these processes. It will investigate both the barriers women face in party primaries and the implications of these disparities on their political participation. Limitations include potential resistance from political party officials in disclosing information about their internal processes, as well as the difficulty in accessing data from female political aspirants due to social stigmas.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Gender Disparities: Imbalances or inequalities in the treatment or representation of men and women, particularly in political processes, leading to unequal opportunities for participation and success.

  • Political Party Primaries: Internal processes within political parties where candidates are selected to run for elected positions. These primaries often determine who will represent the party in general elections.

  • Political Representation: The involvement of individuals, particularly women in this context, in decision-making bodies or positions of power, ensuring that their interests and needs are considered in governance.
